It’s an accepted notion that, we live in a society where the system is usually reactive and the lessons it gets from incidents are far too ephemeral.
So the system fails and so also people who normally get ascribed as suffering from forgetfulness.
Now, coming back to the moot question is, the return of the Corona virus from its one year old hibernation.
For last over two months it had remained a period of unbounded relaxation over the guidelines for protection against Coronavirus.
Government played soft and people did the worse ditching all the norms of the guidelines into the past .
Media’s Selective Amnesia!
That leaves one stakeholder to answer as what happened to it. That’s the media. Which otherwise masquerade as the one which plays the bagpiper role to show the path and generate awareness .
But that didn’t happen .
The media as the medium of creating awareness, got its acts to shift paradigmically to the routine stuffs and let go Coronavirus slip from the roll orders of the bulletins, as if, the virus was already on the retreat .
Even the civic authorities allowed themselves into a kind of procrastination, hiding behind the excuse of vaccination. All the morals over a continuing awareness building and enforcement were given a short shrift .
Were they waiting for the new strains to reach at our door steps ?
But what about the media here in Odisha and nationwide, the Corona factor got dissolved in either the fearlessness or in the presumptive euphoria built by the vaccine coming. And the care a hoot by the people got an unlimited carefree environment .
All Gears Dropped !
The masks disappeared, the physical distancing was bridged by a reckless close proximity at all the places and the preening cameras of the media ignored all such flouting of the guidelines .
Has not the media a role for preemptive awareness building job to alert the society ?
The national media got glued in the West Bengal poll fracas, almost 24×7, and in Odisha it were all the cacophony over politics played out in the state assembly which saturated the bulletins.
Now that not only the virus surged back with a bang but, it has had already a pervasive occupation over us .
Suddenly the media has sprung into action and lengthy air times are now spent on the virus’s comeback .
Knowing well that the deadly virus is going to be with us for a long time to come, a persistent preventive measures is what that is paramount for the media and of course the people .
