Maruti Suzuki prices first ethanol hatchback at Rs 7.24 lakh

India's largest carmaker has officially released the price of its highly anticipated bioethanol-powered passenger vehicle. Built on the top-spec ZXi+ trim, the Maruti Suzuki WagonR Flex Fuel enters the market at Rs 7.24 lakh (ex-showroom). Dubbed the WagonR Bioflex, this model operates on ethanol-petrol blends ranging from E20 up to E85, making it a critical asset in the national push toward green mobility.

Commercial fleet operators are the sole target audience for this initial rollout, as the Bioflex variant remains restricted to the commercial market. This positioning sets its pricing Rs 86,000 higher than the standard top-end petrol version. When evaluated against the standard entry-level commercial model, the Tour H3, the entry cost rises significantly. However, this premium brings a much more capable powertrain.

Powertrain Engineering and Mechanics

Mechanical specifications match the standard configuration, utilizing a 1.2-litre, four-cylinder K12N engine rather than the smaller motor found in basic fleet variants. Output figures stay steady, generating 90.9 HP and 113.7 Nm of torque, distributed through a 5-speed manual transmission. Engineering modifications focus heavily on durability, incorporating a recalibrated electronic control unit and reinforced fuel systems to survive the corrosive nature of high-concentration bioethanol.

This development aligns directly with India's aggressive ethanol-blending road map, championed heavily by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari to lower reliance on costly crude oil imports. For local transportation networks across rapidly developing states like Odisha, where transport fuel expenses directly dictate commodity inflation, expanding into homegrown biofuel alternatives offers a potential long-term buffer against volatile international oil markets.
