Bijapur, June 18: In a chilling act of violence, Maoists on Tuesday brutally murdered three villagers in Peddakorma village, located in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district.
The victims were reportedly relatives of surrendered Maoist cadres. The attack is believed to be a targeted attempt to intimidate locals and punish families connected to former Maoists.
According to police reports, the incident occurred around 4 PM. The deceased Jhingu Modiyam, Soma Modiyam, and Anil Madvi, one of whom was a student were strangled to death using ropes. Two of the victims were relatives of Dinesh Modiyam, a former Maoist commander who had surrendered to authorities a few months ago. Dinesh was considered one of the most notorious Maoists in the region, and his surrender had been a significant intelligence gain for law enforcement.
The killings were reportedly carried out by a Maoist unit led by Commander Vella.
In addition to the murders, Maoists assaulted seven other villagers, leaving them seriously injured. They also abducted over a dozen locals and took them into the surrounding forest. As of 8:30 PM, the whereabouts of the abducted individuals remain unknown.
The situation in Peddakorma remains tense. Family members of the deceased have yet to approach the police, likely due to fear and the village’s remote location. Given the risk of an ambush or IED attack, authorities are hesitant to send police teams to the area at night, raising serious concerns for the safety of the abducted villagers.
