Maneka Gandhi writes to CM Naveen over elephants' safety

New Delhi: Expressing serious concern over the death of seven elephants due to electrocution in Dhenkanal, Union Minister Maneka Gandhi, who is fighting for animals' right, today advised Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik to look into the elephants' safety sincerely in the State. In a letter to Patnaik, Gandhi stated that a total 435 elephants have died in Odisha between 20111 and 2017, out of which 124 cases were electrocution. She suggested the State government to implement AK Biswal committee's recommendations strictly. She also asked the government to act tough on the officials who have not implemented the recommendations. The Centre had constituted AK Biswal committee for the protection of the elephants. Gandhi, in her letter mentioned that death of seven elephants is big number in the country.
