Smriti Mandhana begins her Captaincy against Zimbabwe in Raipur T20I clash

Smriti Mandhana leads India in the bilateral T20 series against Zimbabwe

Raipur gears up to host its maiden women's international cricket fixture today as India faces Zimbabwe in a landmark T20 matchup. Smriti Mandhana officially begins her tenure as the permanent national captain. This encounter marks the first bilateral meeting between the two sides. Following recent triumphs in the Asia Cup and Asian Games, the hosts are looking to build solid momentum ahead of the upcoming Champions Trophy next February.

Stepping in to replace Harmanpreet Kaur, Mandhana brings extensive domestic and franchise leadership experience. She recently guided Royal Challengers Bengaluru to two consecutive WPL titles and boasts 13 years of international playing experience. Her batting remains in absolute peak form, highlighted by two centuries and a career-best strike rate of 148.25 over the past three years. She will be supported by newly appointed vice-captain Shafali Verma. Verma enters the series following a strong string of impressive individual performances.

Lineup Adjustments

India enters the opening match without Jemimah Rodrigues, who is currently recovering from a right hamstring injury. This opening creates an excellent opportunity for emerging talents like Anushka Sharma or Niki Prasad to claim the crucial number three batting position. With spinner Shreyanka Patil notably absent, Prema Rawat might join the final playing eleven.

Zimbabwe arrives desperately seeking a format breakthrough. While they secured a historic one-day victory over West Indies last month, they have lost all 18 of their T20 fixtures this year. Their hopes rest heavily on opener Kelis Ndhlovu. She leads her team's scoring charts with 320 runs and remains the only Zimbabwean to register a half-century in the current calendar year. The visitors plan to leverage their pace attack, featuring Michelle Mavunga and Christine Mutasa, to actively challenge the powerful Indian batting order on a traditionally batter-friendly surface.
