Rourkela, May 14: In a significant judgment, a fast-track court in Rourkela has sentenced Sukaram Nag of Ratakani village to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping and impregnating a girl under the false promise of marriage. The verdict was delivered by Judge P. Surya Rao, who also directed the convict to pay a compensation of ₹4 lakh to the victim. Failure to do so will result in an additional two years of imprisonment.
The case dates back to July 6, 2020, when the victim lodged a complaint at the Lathikata police station. As per the FIR, she had been in a relationship with Sukaram Nag for two years. During this period, the accused established physical relations with her under the false promise of marriage. The victim later became seven months pregnant. However, Sukaram allegedly refused to marry her, prompting legal action.
Acting on the complaint, the police registered a case and arrested the accused. During the trial, the prosecution, led by Special Public Prosecutor Sudam Chandra Dash, presented substantial evidence supporting the charges. After examining all facts and testimonies, the court found Sukaram guilty and awarded the sentence.
The ruling has been seen as a stern message against exploitation under the guise of false promises and a step toward justice for the victim.
