Love, lies and blackmail: Man alleges Rs40 lakh fraud by live-in partner

Bhubaneswar, April 16: In a shocking case of alleged fraud and blackmail, a 37-year-old businessman from Balasore has accused a woman of duping him of ₹35–40 lakh after posing as his second wife. The incident has been reported from Shishupalgarh area, and an investigation has been initiated by Dhauli police.

The complainant, identified as Bismit Ranjan Das, a resident of Maharajpur village under Khantapada in Balasore district, was living in Bhubaneswar for business. Following the death of his wife in 2023, he created a profile on a matrimonial website in search of remarriage.

During this period, he came in contact with a woman, Hemalata Giri alias Mini, from Bhadrak district, who claimed to be divorced and willing to remarry. Within a short span, the two decided to get married, with the woman insisting on keeping the marriage confidential.

Subsequently, they rented a house at Shaktinagar in Shishupalgarh and lived together, introducing themselves as husband and wife. The complainant alleged that the woman gradually took ₹35–40 lakh from him over 10–15 months on various pretexts.

The matter took a dramatic turn when Bismit returned home unexpectedly and allegedly found the woman in a compromising situation with another man. He reportedly recorded the incident and later discovered that she was maintaining relationships with multiple men and collecting money from them.

When he confronted her and demanded his money back, the woman allegedly threatened to implicate him in a rape case and issued death threats.

Following the incident, Bismit approached Dhauli police station and lodged a complaint. Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the matter.
