Makar Sankranti 2022: Makar Sankranti celebrated with religious fervor in Odisha amid Covid-19 restrictions

Bhubaneswar, Jan 14: Holy Makar Sankranti was celebrated with religious fervor across Odisha on Friday. The administration has banned use of Chinese Manja thread used in kite flying as there have been several instances of injuries caused by the Chinese Manja (finely crushed glass particles applied on the nylon thread with gum) during kite flying competition in the city, a decision has been taken for its complete ban this year. The administration has already imposed strict stipulations on congregations during Makar Sankranti and Pongal celebrations. The people have been advised to perform the rituals/puja on the occasion at home with their family members. Congregations at river banks, ghats, ponds, sea shores or near other water bodies for bathing on the occasion of Makar Sankranti and Pongal and on the following day is prohibited throughout the state. Makar Sankranti is yet another important festival of Odisha. During the festival the people of Odisha offers prayers and food to the Sun God and seek blessings for a healthy and prosperous life. The festival holds traditional cultural significance for the people of the state. This festival is observed to mark the Sun's transit from Sagittarius (Dhanu) to Capricorn (Makar). And the apparent movement of the Sun northwards is referred to as Uttarayan. Thus, Makar Sankranti marks the end of the winter solstice (Dakshinayan).
