Bhubaneswar: The Mahanadi Water Disputes Tribunal (MWDT) held its maiden hearing on Mahanadi water dispute between Odisha and Chhattisgarh today in New Delhi.
Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra sought eight weeks of time to present their side on the interim petition filed by Odisha Government. The next hearing is on December 15.
Seeking interim relief in the dispute, the Odisha Government on Tuesday filed an interlocutory application (IA) in the MWDT seeking a stay on construction of barrages and to ensure minimum flow of Mahanadi water during non-monsoon months.
The Government, through the IA, urged the tribunal to pass an interim order to Chhattisgarh to ensure a minimum flow of 1.74 million acre feet (MAF) in Mahanadi during the non-monsoon months – from November to May.
