Kolkata/Bhubaneswar: The much-awaited festival of Durga Puja has officially begun with Maha Shashthi, marking the ceremonial start of the grand celebrations. This year, Maha Shashthi falls on Sunday, 28 September 2025, filling the air with devotion, cultural vibrance, and festive cheer across Bengal and beyond.
Considered one of the most significant days of Durga Puja, Maha Shashthi symbolises the formal arrival of Goddess Durga into devotees’ homes and hearts. The day is observed with key rituals such as Kalparambha, Akal Bodhon, Amantran, and Adhivas, performed mostly during the auspicious Sanyakal period, nearly two hours before sunset.
From the beats of the dhak and the fragrance of shiuli flowers to the vibrant pandals and community gatherings, Shashthi sets the tone for five days of unparalleled celebration. “The arrival of the Mother is the start of all happiness. Maha Shashthi is when the spirit of Pujo truly comes alive,” said Ananya Mukherjee, a college student in Kolkata, while preparing for pandal hopping with friends.
Families and communities are exchanging warm greetings and heartfelt wishes to mark the day. Popular messages being shared include:
“May Maa Durga shower her choicest blessings on you and your family. Shubho Shashthi 2025!”
“The conch shells are blowing, Maa is arriving. Warm Shubho Shashthi wishes!”
“May the dhak beats fill your life with rhythm and joy. Happy Durga Puja Shashthi.”
For many, Shashthi is also about nostalgia and togetherness. “New clothes, bhog, and adda with friends and family—this is what makes Pujo so special,” shared Souvik Das, a Bhubaneswar-based professional, who travelled home to celebrate with loved ones.
