Bhopal, July 21: The Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly on Tuesday passed the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill by a voice vote despite strong protests from Opposition Congress legislators.

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, who tabled the Bill in the House, said its passage marked a "golden chapter" in the state's legislative history. He accused the Congress of missing the opportunity to support the measure due to what he described as appeasement politics and alleged that the party was portraying the Bill as anti-tribal.

The Congress opposed the move, with Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar backing party MLA Arif Masood's demand to refer the Bill to a select committee for detailed discussion before its passage.
