‘Let’s Talk Periods’; Youth-Led Awareness Campaign on Menstrual Health in Odisha

Bhubaneswar, May 27: Emphasising the importance of breaking stigma and encouraging scientific awareness around menstruation, the “Let’s Talk Periods” programme at the World Skill Center (WSC), Bhubaneswar, highlighted the vital role youth can play in creating a healthier, safer, and more inclusive society for women.

The public health awareness initiative was organised by the IFI Foundation in collaboration with WSC as the Academic Partner, in observance of Menstrual Hygiene Day 2026 under the global theme of building a period-friendly world. Swasthya Plus Network and OdishaLIVE joined as Outreach Partners, while aml Communications served as Communication Partner and the Odisha Menstrual Health & Hygiene Alliance participated as Ecosystem Partner.

A large number of students, faculty members, and trainers from different departments of the institution attended the programme and actively engaged in the discussions.

Speaking at the event, Pinaki Patnaik, Additional Secretary of the Skill Development & Technical Education Department, Odisha, and COO of WSC, said that although menstruation is a natural biological process, stigma and misinformation continue to impact the dignity, health, and opportunities of women. He stressed the need for greater awareness and education to build a more empathetic and informed society.

The programme commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Subhanga Kishore Das. Renowned obstetrician and gynaecologist Dr. Chinmayee Kar joined as the technical speaker and spoke extensively on menstrual hygiene, the science behind menstruation, and the importance of dispelling myths associated with periods.

During the event, the IFI Foundation also unveiled a special informational brochure. A thematic audio-visual presentation on menstruation, hygiene management, and common menstrual health issues was screened for participants.

Pranati Parida, Co-Chair of IFI Foundation and Campaign Chair, stated that menstruation should never become an obstacle to a girl’s education, aspirations, or achievements. Referring to global statistics, she noted that more than 1.8 billion women menstruate every month and that women spend nearly seven years of their lives menstruating on average. She reiterated that the campaign aims to ensure dignity, safety, confidence, and equal opportunities for every girl and woman.

An interactive question-and-answer session formed a major highlight of the programme, where Dr. Chinmayee Kar responded to students’ queries on menstrual hygiene, nutrition, myths, emotional wellbeing, and related health concerns.

Among others present were Nilambar Rath, Co-Chair of IFI Foundation, along with senior officials of the institution. Sailesh Mishra, Deputy Director (Admin), WSC, delivered the vote of thanks. The event was anchored by Priyanka Sucharita, while Smruti Rekha Barik, Sitansu Sekhar Sutar, and Sushree Smita Behera coordinated the proceedings.

For the past four years, the IFI Foundation has been actively conducting large-scale advocacy campaigns to spread awareness on menstrual health, challenge social stigma, and encourage inclusive public conversations. This year, the Foundation has additionally launched a five-day digital awareness campaign in 14 languages to promote informed dialogue, collective action, and dignity-centred awareness on menstrual health.
