Phulbani, Sept 23: A major landslide triggered by heavy rainfall last Tuesday near Andharakot between Bulani Points 4 and 5 in the Kalinga Ghat region has once again brought transportation to a standstill between Ganjam and Kandhamal districts.
Large boulders and mud cascaded down from the hills, completely blocking the road and severely disrupting vehicular movement. Initial efforts to clear the debris and restore the route had been underway, but continuous rainfall has posed serious challenges to the repair work.
Just as partial restoration was achieved over the past six days, a fresh spell of heavy rain on Monday washed away the temporary repairs, causing the Kalinga Ghat road to collapse once more. All ongoing restoration work has now been halted, and road connectivity between the two districts remains completely cut off.
Officials report that the upper slopes of the hill remain dangerously unstable, with massive rocks perched precariously on the edges, posing further landslide threats. Due to the high risk and adverse weather conditions, all repair and clearance operations have been temporarily suspended.
Authorities are urging commuters and transporters to avoid the route until further notice, as efforts continue to assess the extent of the damage and plan for safer, long-term restoration.
