Russian drone strikes destroy Indian-run pharmaceutical facility in Ukraine.

Russian drone strikes hit a major pharmaceutical production facility run by India's Kusum Group in the northeastern city of Sumy, killing one person and injuring several others. Visual footage from the impact zone showed thick dark smoke rising above the facility, which suffered severe structural devastation. Early financial estimates indicate losses exceeding Rs 400 crore.

Devastation in Sumy Industrial belt

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky verified the strike in an official statement, noting that Russian forces targeted a civilian pharmaceutical warehouse in Sumy alongside separate strikes on a Kyiv bridge and Dnipro communications networks. Local emergency crews continue rescue operations at the complex as casualty tallies remain subject to revision.

Indian entrepreneur Rajeev Gupta established the Kusum Group in 1994, initially exporting Indian finished formulations to Ukraine. Over three decades, the company evolved from trade distribution into core production, opening its primary Ukrainian manufacturing site in Sumy in 2009 alongside three production facilities in India. The company manufactures more than 50 generic pharmaceutical formulations, serving vital healthcare markets across Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and the Philippines.

Military operations in the region have grown increasingly destructive over recent months. Russian forces have deployed swarms of high-speed Shahed jet drones daily, presenting severe interception hurdles for regional air defense networks. While the Sumy facility had managed continuous output throughout years of conflict, this direct strike severely impairs regional generic medicine distribution networks across Eastern Europe and Central Asia.
