This day marks the end of Ashwina month and the holy Kartik month begins the next day.

Kumar Purnima is one of the popular festivals of Odisha in which unmarried girls observe fast, wishing for a good-looking husband. The girls worship Kumar Kartikeya on the occasion.

Kumar Purnima rituals:

The girls take bath in the morning before sunrise, wear new clothes, collect seven types of fruits and flowers and offer ‘anjuli’ (palmful) to the rising Sun near Brundabati (Tulsi plant) seven times and offer prasad to the Sun. They keep fast throughout the day and in the evening when the moon appears, they again make offerings (Chanda), a special type of food made up of fried paddy, sweets, jaggery, and various types of fruits like banana, coconut, ginger, sugarcane, cucumber, ghee, honey and milk to the moon and take it as prasad.

Besides, everyone sings and dances to a special song. They also play “Puchi”.
