Delhi, May 8: While the divine Sudarshan Chakra, the eternal weapon of Lord Shrikrishna, played a vital role in the great battle of the Mohabharat, as per the Indian mythology, the Sudarshan Chakra, a long-range projectile recently applied by the Indian Armed Forces now proved as one of the mightiest shields for the nation.
The Sudarshan Chakra, a made-in-Russia S-400 most advanced long-range air defence missile system, proved so powerful yet today as Indian Armed forces foiled attempts by the Pakistani military to engage a number of military targets in Northern and Western India using drones and missiles last night with its turbulent defense.
The Sudarshan Chakra today destroyed a Pakistani air defence system in Lahore, officials said on Thursday.
"On the night of 07-08 May 2025, Pakistan attempted to engage a number of military targets in Northern and Western India including Awantipura, Srinagar, Jammu, Pathankot, Amritsar, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Adampur, Bhatinda, Chandigarh, Nal, Phalodi, Uttarlai, and Bhuj, using drones and missiles," the Minister of Defence said in a statement.
Following the engagement, the projectiles were neutralised by the Integrated Counter UAS Grid and Air Defence systems. "The debris of these attacks is now being recovered from a number of locations that prove the Pakistani attacks," the Ministry of Defence added.
“Sudarshan Chakra” by the Indian military, can track targets up to 600 kilometres and intercept them at distances of up to 400 kilometres.
The S-400 is among the world’s most advanced long-range air defence missile systems.
Integrated with the IAF's command and control network, each S-400 squadron consists of two batteries, each equipped with six launchers, advanced radar, and a control center, supporting up to 128 missiles per battery.
The air defence missile systems, was procured by India from Russia for Rs 35,000 crore deal for five S-400 squadrons in 2018.
Deployable in five minutes, the S-400 air defence missile system can detect, track, and engage aerial threats like stealth aircraft, fighter jets, drones, and cruise or ballistic missiles-at ranges up to 400 km and altitudes of 30 km.
Its arsenal includes multiple missile types, allowing layered defence against simultaneous threats at varying distances and altitudes. The system’s phased array radars and electronic warfare resilience make it highly effective even in contested environments.
The Indian Air Force used its S-400 air defence systems on Wednesday night to stop an aerial attack launched by Pakistan, defence sources said on Thursday. The Pakistani attack, aimed at military targets in north and west India, was in response to India's Operation Sindoor.
According to sources, India has four S-400 squadrons. One covers Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab from Pathankot, and another protects key areas in Rajasthan and Gujarat.
In India, the S-400 air defence system is referred to as "Sudarshan Chakra" by the armed forces.
The Russian-made S-400 systems used in the interception are among the most advanced in the world, capable of tracking targets up to 600 kilometres away and intercepting threats at ranges of up to 400 kilometres. India has deployed four squadrons so far—one positioned in Pathankot for the defence of Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab, and another covering strategic areas in Rajasthan and Gujarat.
Delhi has yet procured five squadrons, with three already operational and two more expected by 2026.
