KHANDAGIRI

Bhubaneswar, February 4: The annual nine-day Khandagiri Kumbha Mela has commenced at the foothills of Khandagiri and Udaygiri hills in Bhubaneswar today. The event, which marks the occasion of Magha Saptami, the seventh day of the holy month of Magha, begins on February 4 this year.

As Magha Saptami unfolds, the air is filled with excitement and reverence. Sadhus from sacred pilgrimage spots such as Kashi, Benaras, and Ayodhya arrive, adding to the spiritual energy of the gathering. Their presence enhances the spiritual atmosphere, signaling the start of the sacred festivities.

As the day progresses and the sun rises higher, the sadhus make their way to Khandagiri, where the yajna (holy fire lighting) takes place with much fanfare. The sacred fire, accompanied by the fragrance of incense and the chanting of ancient mantras, becomes a focal point for the faithful who gather to witness the powerful ritual.

In the evening, the local community from Jagamara, a settlement at the base of Khandagiri, carries out a procession. They escort the deity of Lord Anant Keshari in a palanquin as they walk toward the foothills of Udaygiri.

Many of the sadhus take a holy dip early on Magha Saptami morning at the Chandrabhaga beach in Konark before making their way to Khandagiri to join in the lighting of the sacred fire and other rituals that mark the beginning of this spiritual event.
