Bhubaneswar: The death toll in the Kendrapara Hukitola boat mishap would have been much more if villagers of Nipania had not immediately plunged into the deep water, braving coldness, fear of attack from crocodiles and darkness, and rescued about 45 people.
Thanks to the three youths of Nipania village who jumped into the Mahanadi water to rescue drowning people, without caring for their own life.
“The Mahanadi confluence point is home to crocodiles. Despite knowing this, three youths jumped into the deep water to rescue people. They saved about 45 lives,” said local MLA Atanu Sabyasachin Nayak.
It may be noted that villagers of Hasina under Jagatsinghpur district’s Kujang block were returning from a picnic when the ill-fated boat capsized.
Fire personnel and ODRAF team took hours to reach the spot as the road communication to the mishap site is not good.
A child is still missing. The rescue teams are searching for him.
