Bhawanipatna, Jan 27: The Kalahandi police claimed to have cracked a case of online fraud with the arrest of five persons in Uttar Pradesh for duping a Bhawanipatna resident recently. This was informed by Bhawanipatna SDPO Satyanarayan Subudhi at a presser held today.
The accused have been identified as Avilash Singh, Parvej Ahamad, Wahid Khan, Saharukh Khan and Juned Ahamad, residents of Bigehna village under Bewra police limits in UP’s Hamipur.
The police have also recovered Rs 52,388 cash and 10 mobile phones from the accused persons, said the SDPO.
According to police, an elderly couple was allegedly duped of Rs 2.68 lakh after an unidentified caller, claiming to be a customer care executive of a telecom firm, asked them to follow certain procedures for cash prizes on the occasion of New Year. The victim Gangadhar Subudhi, a retired senior citizen of Bhawanipatna Sharma Colony, lodged a complaint with the Bhawanipatna Police and Cyber Cell at SP office here in the matter.
Firstly the fraudster, claiming to be a customer care executive of a telecom firm, called up Gangadhar and asked him that he was facing any problem with the telecom services. Later, to solve the problems faced by Gangadhar, he asked for the personal details.
The fraudster later said the senior citizen that he had won a mobile gift and a cash prize of Rs 20,000 for the New Year.
Later, the charlatan swindled Rs 1 lakh by taking Rs 20,000 on 5 occasions from Google Pay and Rs 45,000 from his bank accounts by obtaining the OTP from Gangadhar. The fraudster even took away Rs 1,20,000 from his wife’s account.
