Kalahandi, Jan 18: An elderly couple was allegedly duped of Rs 2.65 lakh after an unidentified caller, claiming to be a customer care executive of a telecom firm, asked them to follow certain procedures for cash prizes on the occasion of New Year.
The victim Gangadhar Subudhi, a retired senior citizen of Bhawanipatna Sharma Colony, lodged a complaint with the Bhawanipatna Police and Cyber Cell at SP office here in the matter.
According to reports, firstly the fraudster, claiming to be a customer care executive of a telecom firm, called up Gangadhar and asked him that he was facing any problem with the telecom services. Later, to solve the problems faced by Gangadhar, he asked for the personal details.
The fraudster later said the senior citizen that he had won a mobile gift and a cash prize of Rs 20,000 for the New Year.
Later, the charlatan swindled Rs 1 lakh by taking Rs 20,000 on 5 occasions from Google Pay and Rs 45,000 from his bank accounts by obtaining the OTP from Gangadhar. The fraudster even took away Rs 1,20,000 from his wife’s account.
Despite the awareness by the bank to not to provide OTP numbers to any unknown person, the retired couple was duped.
Nowadays, cyber fraudsters are succeeding in stealing money from people’s accounts by talking about various enticing things.
Even if people are being warned about it through various advertisements on TV and newspapers, yet they are falling prey to greedy fraudsters.
