Bhubaneswar: Journalists and photo journalists in large numbers sat on a dharna at the Lower PMG area on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti here in protest against attack on mediapersons across the State.
Senior journalists like Prasanna Mohanty, Akshaya Kumar Sahoo, Ardhendu Sekhar Sarangi have joined the dharna. The journalists have demanded that the State Government legislate a special law to provide security to working journalists as all levels across the State.
It may be noted that two journalists had been severely injured after being attacked by Puri police two days back. They are still undergoing treatment at the SCB Medical College Hospital in Cuttack.
Incidents of police attacking journalists and photojournalists at different places have been reported many times in Odisha. In Capital city too, some scribes were beaten up by traffic police earlier.
“We are working to disseminate information among people. We often take risks in collecting information. It is the responsibility of the State Government to provide security to us,” said working journalists sitting on the dharna.
They demanded that the Government should enact a special law in line with Maharashra to provide protection to all working mediaprsons.
Meanwhile, teacher organisations and intellectuals belonging to different fields have condemned the attack on reporters and photohournalists.
