Shifting from free sites makes capital protests exceptionally costly

Relocating demonstrations from Jantar Mantar to newly designated sites transforms political expression into an expensive undertaking in the national capital. Organizers must now prepare to spend well over Rs 1 lakh to secure alternative venues, factoring in daily rentals, sanitation charges, and mandatory goods and services tax levies. Though, citizens utilized Jantar Mantar for free to voice their grievances. Removing this site shifts all public gatherings to paid alternatives approved by local authorities, fundamentally changing how civic movements operate in Delhi.

Booking Ramlila Maidan demands hefty fees

Securing the iconic Ramlila Maidan requires navigating strict Municipal Corporation guidelines and making significant upfront payments. Event organizers face a steep financial barrier, beginning with a Rs 50,000 security deposit. Added to this is a daily rental fee of Rs 50,000, along with a Rs 5,000 ground security charge, Rs 4,000 for daily sanitation, and a Rs 2,000 license fee. Authorities also levy an 18% GST of Rs 10,080 on these charges. Consequently, booking this venue for a single day forces citizens to pay a total of Rs 1,21,080.

Financial burden at DDA supervised grounds

Delhi Development Authority oversees the other designated locations, including CBS Ground in Shahdara and Bhalswa Ground. Reserving a 3,000-square-meter area at CBS Ground costs Rs 1,07,614 per day. This sum incorporates a Rs 95,832 security deposit, Rs 9,982 for sanitation, and Rs 1,800 in taxes. Excluding the refundable deposit, the daily expense remains Rs 11,782.

Staggering costs for larger assembly areas

Reserving larger spaces drives prices even higher. Booking an 8,000-square-meter section at Bhalswa Ground demands a total payment of Rs 2,87,333. This total includes a Rs 2,55,552 deposit, Rs 26,933 for sanitation, and Rs 4,850 in taxes. Even after receiving the deposit refund, organizations lose Rs 31,733 daily, making future civic gatherings an undeniable financial challenge.
