Irate mob sets police van ablaze over youth’s death in Bhadrak

Bhadrak, Jan 13: Tension erupted as locals set ablaze a police van and thrashed the police personnel over death of a youth at Alinagar Square in the district on Wednesday. The deceased has been identified as Bapi Mahalik, a resident of Hatuari village under Nayanand Panchayat. According to locals, the deceased had gone to his sister’s house for some work. While on his way, suddenly the police allegedly chased him over some undisclosed reasons. As police chased him, Bapi got frightened and fell into a nearby pond and died due to drowning. Later, the locals held a road blockage between Bhadrak and Chandbali keeping the body of the deceased on the road and staged a protest by burning tyres. While the police reached the spot to take control over the situation, the angry locals thrashed them and set their vehicle on fire. They also pelted stones as more police forces were deployed to control the situation.
