India-Pakistan war: All educational institutes shut, exams canceled in Punjab

Chandigarh, May 9: Amid the escalated tensions between India and Pakistan in the aftermath of India's ‘Operation Sindoor’, Punjab government on Friday ordered closure of all educational institutes and cancelled exams across the state.

With official approval, the ongoing end semester exams have been postponed until further notice due to unexpected reasons, announced I.K. Gujral Punjab Technical University in Jalandhar on Friday.

The university said the new exam schedule will be released at least five days before the exams begin.

Notably, the state government has set up a control room to assist people amid the ongoing conflict with Pakistan. It can be contacted at the following landline numbers: 0172-2741803 and 0172-2749901.

State Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains announced that all schools, colleges, and universities in Punjab—whether government, private, or aided—will remain closed for the next three days due to the current situation. On Thursday night, power cuts were reported in six border districts of Punjab—Ferozpur, Pathankot, Fazilka, Amritsar, Gurdaspur, and Tarn Taran—where Pakistani drones tried to cross the border.

In Chandigarh, the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana, authorities have announced that all schools will remain closed until Saturday. The leave of all Punjab Police personnel was also cancelled.

On Thursday, the Border Security Force (BSF) stopped a Pakistani intruder in the Ferozepur sector. The intruder, whose identity is still unknown, was shot and killed early on Friday while trying to cross the International Border between India and Pakistan.

The BSF spotted him attempting to infiltrate near a gate close to the Lakha Singh Wala BSF post.

It is worth mentioning that Punjab shares a 532-km-long border with Pakistan, so during times of military tension, the role of the state government and its security and law enforcement agencies is very important.

The state government has also asked the people of Punjab to follow all government orders and guidelines carefully to keep public safety secure.
