Green fuel gets tax relief to cut import bills
Central government authorities officially exempted higher ethanol-blended petrol variants from excise duty to accelerate the adoption of clean energy. This fiscal relief covers fuel mixtures containing 22 percent to 30 percent ethanol, including E22, E25, E27, and E30. The decision follows a recent technical notification by the Bureau of Indian Standards, which established strict quality, safety, and sulphur limits for these specific blends.
Policymakers intend to build a robust domestic market for alternative fuels while reducing heavy reliance on international energy supplies. Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari stated that shifting toward indigenous green options keeps capital within the local economy, creating direct financial advantages for rural communities, laborers, and agricultural workers. This initiative aligns with national long-term goals to secure resource independence, mirroring state-level rural development models like Odisha’s emphasis on boosting farm-gate incomes through agro-processing industries.
While the tax relief aims to accelerate clean energy adoption, consumers continue to raise valid operational questions. Vehicle owners previously expressed skepticism regarding potential mileage drops and mechanical compatibility during the earlier expansion of E20 fuel. Although the Supreme Court rejected a legal challenge against the initial national rollout, automotive industry representatives acknowledged that while older vehicle engines might experience a slight reduction in fuel efficiency, the safety of the vehicle remains entirely uncompromised.
Financially, the pricing dynamic for these cleaner alternatives remains highly complex. Official data indicates that the weighted average procurement cost for alternative feedstocks has frequently surpassed the price of refined fossil fuel. However, the introduction of a tax waiver provides a critical financial cushion, allowing public sector marketing firms to experiment with discounted pricing models for advanced flex-fuel options across the country.
