New Delhi, September 17: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said India was positioning itself as a reliable global hub for semiconductor manufacturing as disruptions and vulnerabilities in international supply chains continue to pose challenges.
Addressing the fifth edition of SEMICON India 2026 at the Yashobhoomi Convention Centre, Modi called on global manufacturers of semiconductor equipment and components to invest in India's rapidly expanding high-technology ecosystem.
Highlighting emerging opportunities in compound semiconductors, silicon photonics and AI-focused infrastructure, the Prime Minister said India was working to strengthen semiconductor supply chains through policy reforms, investments and the development of domestic capabilities.
Modi said the government has set a target of training one lakh engineering students for the semiconductor industry, with more than70,000 students already trained.
India's semiconductor push has also gained momentum with major projects involving companies such as Tata Electronics, Micron Technology, CG Power and Kaynes Technology. Projects are being developed across Gujarat, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Punjab and Andhra Pradesh.
According to government data, India's electronics production increased from aroundRs 1.9 lakh crore in 2014-15 to nearly Rs 12 lakh crore in 2024-25. Electronics exports also rose sharply during the period, from aboutRs 38,000 crore to nearly Rs 3.3 lakh crore.
The government launched the Semicon India Programme in 2022 with the objective of establishing an end-to-end semiconductor ecosystem in the country. So far,10 projects with investment commitments of around Rs 1.6 lakh crorehave been approved under the programme.
Being held from September 17 to 19, SEMICON India 2026 brings together industry stakeholders, policymakers and international partners to discuss semiconductor manufacturing, technology and supply-chain development. The event is being organised around the theme“Silicon to Systems: Building the Ecosystem.”
