World Athlete Day: Odisha woman redefines marathon running in handloom sarees

Bhubaneswar, May 7: Breaking stereotypes with every stride, Babita Debadarshini from Kalinga Vihar in Bhubaneswar has emerged as a unique face in marathon running by competing in traditional Odisha handloom sarees instead of tracksuits.

At 51, Babita has been participating in marathon events across the country for the last five years, promoting Odisha’s culture and handloom heritage through her distinctive appearance. Her sarees, woven by Odisha’s skilled artisans, have become a symbol of tradition blended with endurance and determination.

Babita has so far taken part in more than 70 running events, including three full marathons and 20 half marathons. She has represented Odisha in races held in Maharashtra, Kolkata, Delhi, Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam, besides various events within the state. She has also secured podium finishes in several competitions.

Her journey into long-distance running began with a 10-kilometre race organised in Bhubaneswar. Encouraged by her performance, she gradually moved towards longer races and marathons. Despite managing household responsibilities, Babita maintains a disciplined fitness routine that includes running five kilometres daily and practising yoga regularly.

Speaking about her inspiration, Babita said she chose to run in sarees to convey the message that women can confidently participate in marathons while embracing traditional attire.
