Bhubaneswar, May 13: A 54-year-old woman narrowly escaped a fatal attack by a saltwater crocodile while washing utensils in a river near Bhitarkanika National Park, Kendrapara, forest officials reported on Wednesday.
The incident occurred at Petachela village, located within the Mahakalapada forest range in Kendrapara district.
Chabi Bhukta had gone into the Ramachandi River to wash utensils when a crocodile suddenly lunged at her, seizing her hand and attempting to pull her into the deep water. In a desperate struggle, she struck the reptile in the eyes with a spoon, forcing it to release her and allowing her to escape unharmed.
Forest authorities have urged villagers to exercise caution near rivers and waterways around the national park, especially during daily activities.
