Tiger Memon's Mumbai flats, where 1993 blasts were plotted, set for government auction after 32 years

32 Years After 1993 Blasts, Tiger Memon’s Properties Headed for Auction

Mumbai: Properties belonging to Tiger Memon are finally set to be auctioned. Memon is the absconding mastermind of the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts. This action comes more than three decades after one of India's most horrific terror attacks.

The Smugglers and Foreign Exchange Manipulators (Forfeiture and Property) Act Authority (SAFEMA) is handling the sale. It has started the final legal steps to sell assets seized from Memon and his family.

One key property is in the Al Husseini building in Mahim which has a dark history. Investigators say key conspiracy meetings for the blasts were held here. These meetings took place in the Memon family's flats. The 1993 serial blasts killed 257 people and injured hundreds.

These properties were sealed for over 30 years which were reopened in April 2025 for official valuation. SAFEMA has now taken possession of eight properties. These are being prepared for auction.

The list includes:

  • Three flats in the Al Husseini building
  • One flat in Bandra and two in Kurla
  • Four shops in South Mumbai's Manish Market. These were co-owned by Tiger Memon and co-conspirator Mohammad Dosa.

Officials state the auction could begin by December 2025 or January 2026. This will happen once all formalities are complete.

A 10,000 sq m parcel of land in Vakola is one of the most high-value assets. It is estimated to be worth around Rs 400 crore. However, this property faces challenges. It is currently encroached upon, which complicates taking physical possession. Not all of Memon's assets are ready for sale. Several properties are still locked in litigation. Others are still being transferred to SAFEMA's control.

Tiger Memon remains one of India’s most wanted fugitives. He is widely believed to be hiding in Pakistan. His brother, Yakub Memon, was convicted for his role in the conspiracy and was executed in 2015. This auction is long overdue. It marks a significant step in closing a painful chapter from the 1993 attacks.
