
Chennai, Sept 19: Popular Tamil actor and comedian Robo Shankar passed away at the age of 46, GEM Hospital confirmed on Thursday. The actor, who had been admitted in a critical condition two days earlier, succumbed to complications despite intensive treatment.
In an official statement, GEM Hospital said, “Mr Robo Shankar was admitted to GEM Hospital, Perungudi, Chennai, on September 16, 2025, in a critical condition with a massive gastrointestinal bleed and multi-organ dysfunction secondary to a complex abdominal condition. He was managed in the critical care unit with intensive medical management. Despite the best efforts of our multidisciplinary team, his condition deteriorated rapidly. He was declared dead on September 18, 2025, at 9.05pm.”
Robo Shankar had been battling health issues for some time. Two years ago, he was diagnosed with jaundice and underwent extensive treatment. His significant weight loss during that period had raised concerns among fans.
The actor first rose to prominence through the reality show Kalakka Povadhu Yaaru, which showcased stand-up comedians. He soon transitioned into films, appearing in Idharkuthane Aasaipattai Balakumara and VaayaiMoodi Pesavum. His major breakthrough came in 2015 with Maari, where his performance as Sanikizhamai alongside Dhanush won him widespread recognition.
Over the years, he featured in a string of successful films, including Singam 3, Velaikkaran, Kalakalappu 2, Maari 2, Iravin Nizhal, and Singapore Saloon. His final on-screen role was in the recently released Sotta Sotta Nenaiyuthu.
Robo Shankar is survived by his wife Priyanka, daughter Indraja, and a grandson. Indraja, who has followed her father’s path into acting, is well known for her role in the Vijay-starrer Bigil.
