Jharsuguda, May 12: Six students from underprivileged slums have overcome hardship and poverty to excel in this year’s matriculation exams, inspiring their local community.
Among them is 16-year-old Bale Murmu from Neelapadia slum, who had to quit school after Class VII to help with household chores and washing dishes. Family pressures and lack of resources had kept him away from education. With support from the NGO Asha-ein, Bale resumed his studies and scored 240 out of 600 in the matric exam. He now aspires to become a teacher and educate other children in slum communities.
Similarly, Swapna Kala from the Damana Mandap slum overcame early marriage pressures and household responsibilities to score 271 marks. Other students, including Barsha Digi, Golapi Patra, Raja Sahu, and Icharan Reddy, also cleared the exams despite facing significant challenges such as poverty and neglect.
In a recent event organized by Prameya, students like Suhana Khatun showcased their literary talents by reciting poems dedicated to mothers. Abandoned by her father, Suhana excelled academically and artistically under Asha-ein’s guidance, demonstrating how opportunity and perseverance can transform lives.
“These children are a shining example of how determination, guidance, and support can help marginalized youth achieve their dreams,” said Ratnakar Sahu, president of Asha-ein, pledging continued support for their education.
