Sanctions Relief Could Restore Iran as a Key Oil Supplier to India, Says Envoy Mohammad Fathali

New Delhi, June 18: Iran's Ambassador to India, Mohammad Fathali, has expressed optimism that the removal of sanctions on Iran could pave the way for a significant revival in bilateral trade and energy cooperation between the two countries. He stated that Iran could once again emerge as one of India's leading crude oil suppliers if restrictions are fully lifted.

Speaking exclusively to ANI, Fathali noted that India and Iran have historically shared strong energy ties. Before the imposition of sanctions, Iran frequently ranked among India's top three crude oil exporters, while annual bilateral trade between the two nations exceeded USD 17 billion.

“These figures demonstrate the immense potential that exists for economic and energy collaboration between Iran and India,” the envoy said.

Fathali highlighted Iran’s position as one of the world's largest oil producers and exporters, emphasizing that Tehran has always sought to make its energy resources available to countries interested in purchasing them. He described India as one of Iran’s most valued energy partners and said the two nations have enjoyed a long-standing and successful record of cooperation in the oil sector.

According to the ambassador, India’s growing demand for reliable, stable and affordable energy can be effectively met by Iran’s vast production capabilities. “If sanctions are lifted and normal trade conditions are restored, Iran can undoubtedly reclaim its position as one of India’s principal oil suppliers,” he said.

Fathali further expressed hope that the easing of restrictions would not only facilitate the resumption of Iranian oil exports to India but also boost bilateral trade and investment beyond previous highs.

“We are hopeful that with the complete removal of sanctions, trade volumes and joint investment initiatives between our countries will exceed earlier peak levels and reflect the true potential of our partnership,” he added.

The envoy also voiced expectations that ongoing diplomatic efforts would result in the withdrawal of what he described as “unjust and unilateral sanctions” imposed on Iran, including restrictions affecting oil exports.

While acknowledging that achieving comprehensive sanctions relief would require sustained negotiations and agreement on implementation mechanisms, Fathali remained optimistic about future progress. “With sufficient political will and continued commitment from all sides to honour their obligations, there is every reason to believe that the process of sanctions relief can advance more quickly in the coming period,” he said.
