Sacred Banakalagi Niti to be held at Srimandir

Puri, Dec 3: The sacred Banakalagi or Shrimukha Sringara ritual of Lord Jagannath will be performed at the Shree Jagannath Temple on Wednesday with temple priests performing the sacred ritual with utmost devotion and precision, in line with the rich Jagannath tradition.

During the ceremony, the servitors will apply natural colors and pastes to the facial features of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra. This ritual symbolizes spiritual renewal, devotion, and the rejuvenation of divine energy, while also highlighting the temple’s dedication to preserving centuries-old customs.

According to temple authorities, the Banakalagi Niti will begin after the second bhog is completed at the Bhog Mandap. As a result, public darshan will be suspended from 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm to maintain the confidentiality and sanctity of the ceremony.

Officials have advised devotees and tourists to plan their visits accordingly. They emphasized that respecting the discipline of the Banakalagi Niti reflects a deep sense of devotion and reverence toward the deities. This ritual not only sustains the spiritual energy of the temple but also strengthens the cultural heritage of Odisha.

To ensure the smooth execution of the event, temple authorities have confirmed that all necessary arrangements will be in place to support the pilgrims' safety and convenience. Darshan will resume at 10:00 pm, allowing devotees to receive blessings after the ceremony is completed.
