Bhubaneswar, May 3: Over the past few days, residents of western and southern Odisha have reported experiencing several earthquake tremors, sparking concern in districts like Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Balangir, and Nuapada. While the tremors were relatively mild and caused no major damage, experts have cautioned against dismissing the events.
According to geologists, although these regions are not located on the Himalayan tectonic plate, they are still susceptible to geological activity. Senior professors from the Department of Geology at IIT Kharagpur noted that the recent tremors in Kalahandi are linked to an ancient fault line extending from the Eastern Ghats to Bastar in Chhattisgarh. This fault, which had been inactive for decades, has recently shown signs of movement.
Experts emphasise the need for regular monitoring to understand why this long-dormant fault has become active and to gather accurate seismic data. They warn that even low to moderate tremors should not be taken lightly.
