Puri, Jul 1: Preparations for the world-famous Rath Yatra are progressing in full swing, with artisans and traditional servitors working meticulously to complete the remaining components of the three chariots of the Holy Trinity.
After the Biswakarma (carpenter) servitors completed crafting the Kalash (sacred finials) for the chariots, the structures are now being adorned with vibrant colours and intricate designs by the Chitrakar (traditional painter) servitors. According to Chitrakar servitor Chittaranjan Maharana, the Kalash are being painted in two sections, with beautiful lotus petal motifs enhancing their appearance.
Each of the three Kalash, one for every chariot, is being painted in six sections. Once the artwork is completed, the two main parts will be lifted onto the chariots and joined together to form the complete Kalash.
Meanwhile, work is also underway on the Charamala (wooden ramps), an essential structure used during the ceremonial Pahandi procession, when the deities are carried from the sanctum of the Shree Jagannath Temple to their respective chariots. Biswakarma servitors are shaping sturdy sal wood planks, and eight new Charamala are being prepared this year.
On Tuesday, craftsmen installed the Dhuli Danda on the chariots, while Rupakar (wood sculptor) servitors are in the final stages of carving and polishing the decorative Prabha panels. The Ojha servitors have supplied specially forged iron nails required for fixing the Dhuli Danda and are now preparing metal fittings for the Prabha and the braking mechanism of the chariots.
At the Dolabedi premises, Pahi Maharana servitors are also busy crafting wooden ritual implements required for the daily ceremonies of the deities during the annual festival.
As the countdown to Rath Yatra continues, every stage of the construction reflects centuries-old craftsmanship and hereditary temple traditions, ensuring the majestic chariots are ready for the grand annual procession of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra.
