Rahul Gandhi Criticises PM Modi’s Italy Visit, Calls ‘Toffee Gesture’ a Gimmick

New Delhi, May 20:Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of being disconnected from the economic struggles faced by ordinary Indians.

In a post on X, Gandhi highlighted the contrast between Modi’s diplomatic engagements abroad and the financial hardships at home, especially for farmers, youth, women, labourers, and small business owners.

“An economic storm is brewing over our heads, and our Prime Minister is handing over toffees in Italy,” Gandhi said, referring to Modi’s recent gift of ‘Melody’ toffees to Italian PM Giorgia Meloni, which Meloni acknowledged with a post on X. “Farmers, youth, women, labourers, and small traders are all struggling, while the PM is smiling, making Reels, and BJP leaders are clapping. This is not leadership; it is a theatrical gimmick.”

Gandhi has previously criticised Modi for embarking on foreign trips amid rising inflation, fuel price hikes, and announced austerity measures, calling it contradictory to his public advisories against buying gold or travelling abroad.

Addressing a rally in Raebareli, Uttar Pradesh, Gandhi warned of an impending economic crisis. “Narendra Modi tells the public: Don’t buy gold, don’t go abroad, drive an electric vehicle. Immediately after, he boards a multi-thousand-crore aircraft for an overseas tour. Meanwhile, inflation rises, prices soar, and there could be shortages of essential commodities like fertilisers,” he said.

Prime Minister Modi is currently in Italy, completing the final leg of his five-nation tour. Prior to Italy, he visited Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands, and the United Arab Emirates.
