Panic buying hits Bhubaneswar amid fears of fuel shortage

Bhubaneswar, May 14: The capital city witnessed panic buying of petrol and diesel on Thursday as fears of a potential fuel shortage gripped residents amid escalating tensions between the US and Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Long queues formed at fuel stations across the city as commuters and vehicle owners rushed to stock up on fuel.

Several petrol pumps reportedly ran out of fuel, prompting operators to display “No Petrol, No Diesel” notices outside their outlets. The sudden surge in demand created chaotic scenes at many filling stations, with motorists waiting for hours to fill their tanks.

Industry sources say the ongoing geopolitical tensions have raised concerns over crude oil supplies, which has contributed to the panic buying. “People are understandably anxious. The situation in the Middle East has disrupted global energy markets, and consumers are reacting by stocking up,” said a fuel station operator in the city.

While many residents joined the rush to ensure their vehicles remain operational, some expressed frustration at the disorderly lines and hoarding behavior. “It’s alarming to see such panic. There is no official shortage yet, but everyone seems to be in a hurry to fill their tanks,” said a local commuter.

Authorities have urged citizens to remain calm and avoid unnecessary hoarding. The Odisha State Fuel Department has assured that fuel supplies are being monitored and replenished regularly, and there is no immediate shortage in the state.
