Bhubaneswar, June 5: Odisha has achieved a major milestone in India’s renewable energy sector by securing top national honours at the PM Surya Ghar Excellence Awards, recognizing its outstanding performance under the “Month of Solar” campaign held in May 2026.

The state was honoured by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) for its strong implementation of the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, positioning Odisha as a leading state in the country’s clean energy transition.

Odisha delivered a clean sweep across major categories, securing:

· 1st place for maximum consumer applications

· 1st place for maximum solar installations

· 1st place for maximum DISCOM inspections

· 3rd place for maximum vendor registrations

The awards were presented by Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi. They were received by senior officials from Odisha’s Energy Department, including Additional Secretary Saidutta Biplab Keshari Pradhan, along with representatives of state DISCOMs.

Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo praised the achievement, crediting strong coordination between departments and the dedication of field-level officers. He said the recognition reflects Odisha’s commitment to sustainable development and building an energy-secure, self-reliant state.

The success has been supported by targeted policy interventions, including dedicated state budget allocations for rooftop solar expansion. The government has also implemented innovative models such as Utility-Led Aggregation (ULA), which have made rooftop solar more accessible to households and helped many families move towards near-zero electricity bills.

Odisha has set an ambitious target to cover 3 lakh households by 2027, with continued expansion of infrastructure, improved inspection systems, and a strengthened vendor ecosystem to ensure transparent and efficient rollout of solar energy across the state.
