Odisha plans world-class tourism development at Khandagiri-Udayagiri Hills

Bhubaneswar, May 9: Odisha is set to transform the historic Khandagiri and Udayagiri hills into a world-class tourism destination. The state government has proposed a major plan, and the Odisha Tourism Department has prepared a detailed blueprint for its implementation.

A proposal worth approximately ₹100 crore has been submitted by the divisional standing committee for the comprehensive development of this heritage site. A key feature of the plan is the installation of a grand statue of Kalinga rulers Mahameghavahana and Kharavela. The committee has recommended developing Khandagiri as a “complete tourism hub” and prioritizing it as a major tourism project of the state.

The proposed development includes beautification of the eastern side and foothills of Khandagiri. Facilities such as a walking park, musical fountains, modern lighting arrangements, ramps or lifts for elderly and differently-abled visitors and an open-air amphitheater with a lecture center are planned. For heritage protection, existing roads through the hills may be permanently closed, and a dedicated entry path is proposed.

Currently, the proposal is under review, and the Tourism Department is examining land acquisition and financial arrangements. Officials have been directed to submit the implementation report by the end of May, after which the final decision on the project will be made.
