Bhubaneswar, June 1: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Monday appealed to residents across the state to exercise caution as severe heatwave conditions continue to prevail, posing significant health risks due to soaring temperatures and rising humidity levels.
In a message shared on X, the Chief Minister expressed concern over the ongoing weather situation and urged people to follow safety measures to protect themselves from heat-related ailments.
Emphasising the importance of staying hydrated, Majhi advised citizens to drink water frequently, even in the absence of thirst. He also encouraged the consumption of traditional cooling drinks such as torani, bela pana, mandia pej, coconut water and lemon juice to help combat the extreme heat.
The Chief Minister urged people to avoid venturing outdoors during the hottest hours of the day unless necessary. Those required to step outside were advised to carry adequate drinking water and use protective gear such as umbrellas, hats and wet cloths to minimise exposure to the scorching weather.
Special precautions were recommended for vulnerable groups, including children, pregnant women, and senior citizens. Majhi advised them to remain indoors as much as possible during periods of intense heat. He also asked family members and caregivers to watch for signs of heat stress, including excessive sweating, dry skin, dizziness, and reduced urination, and to seek immediate medical attention when needed.
Calling for community support, the Chief Minister encouraged citizens to assist daily wage earners and others working outdoors under difficult conditions. He also appealed to people to offer drinking water to passers-by and participate in local initiatives aimed at reducing the impact of the heatwave.
Majhi further urged residents to show care for animals and birds by placing earthen pots filled with water in shaded areas outside their homes.
Highlighting the role of collective responsibility, the Chief Minister said public awareness and active community participation are essential to preventing heat-related casualties during the ongoing heatwave.
Expressing confidence in the public’s cooperation, Majhi stated, “I firmly believe that our collective efforts and awareness will keep everyone safe in these difficult times. Be careful, stay healthy.”
