Bhubaneswar, May 12: A 62-year-old woman died in Bolangir district after receiving an incorrect injection from an unlicensed practitioner, sparking public outrage and renewed calls to crack down on illegal medical clinics.
The incident occurred in Karlapita village, under the jurisdiction of Muribahal police.
According to reports, the victim, Kaushalya Panika, had been seeking treatment for a skin infection at the clinic of Tunu Bagarti in Haladi village. On Sunday, she visited the clinic accompanied by her granddaughter, and received an injection. She collapsed shortly afterward and was pronounced dead.
Family members rushed to the clinic, causing a commotion. Witnesses stated that the practitioner closed his clinic and fled. Allegations have emerged that he offered the family ₹1 lakh to keep the matter quiet. The body was cremated without a post-mortem examination, further raising suspicions.
The incident has drawn widespread anger among locals, who criticized authorities for overlooking illegal medical practices in rural areas. Media reports have highlighted the use of counterfeit medicines and unverified injections by unlicensed practitioners.
On Tuesday, Bolangir Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) Dr. Pushpanjali Mishra ordered a formal inquiry into the case. Officials confirmed that the investigation will focus on the type of injection administered and the circumstances surrounding the death. The police have registered a case but have not disclosed further details.
Residents are demanding stricter action against quacks and the networks supplying fake medicines in Muribahal and the surrounding areas.
