Bhubaneswar, June 4: Biju Janata Dal (BJD) president and Leader of Opposition, Naveen Patnaik, has expressed deep sorrow over the demise of renowned Odia litterateur, playwright, and former administrator, Dr. Jagannath Prasad Das.
In a condolence message shared on his official X account, Naveen paid tribute to the distinguished writer, describing his passing as a significant loss to Odia literature and culture.
“I am saddened to learn about the passing of distinguished litterateur, administrator, and playwright Jagannath Prasad Das. His invaluable contributions towards enriching Odia literature and the world of theatre will always be remembered. I pray for the eternal peace of his soul and extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members,” Naveen said.
According to reports, Dr. Das passed away in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday night at the age of 90.
A multifaceted personality, Dr. Das made remarkable contributions as a poet, playwright, novelist, painter, actor, and art historian. Widely regarded as one of the most influential voices in modern Odia literature since the 1960s, he authored several acclaimed poetry collections, including Prathama Purusha, Ahnika, and Parikrama.
His literary works are celebrated for their unique blend of modernist thought, philosophical depth, and cultural introspection. In recognition of his outstanding contribution to literature, he was conferred the prestigious Saraswati Samman in 2006 for Parikrama. Notably, he declined the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1990, reflecting his strong personal convictions.
The passing of Dr. Jagannath Prasad Das marks the end of an era in Odia literature, leaving behind a rich legacy that will continue to inspire generations of readers, writers and cultural enthusiasts.
