Odisha Day celebrations in Lucknow honours legacy of Guru Kelucharan Mahapatra

Odissi legends and literary icons converged at the Visweshwariya Auditorium as the Lucknow Odia Samaj marked Utkal Diwas with a special tribute to Guru Kelucharan Mahapatra. This year's festivities carried profound weight, coinciding with the birth centenary of the Padma Bhushan awardee who redefined classical dance for the modern era. While Odisha celebrates its 1936 formation as the first Indian state organized on a linguistic basis, this Lucknow-based gathering bridged the geographical gap between the Mahanadi and Gomti rivers.

Centenary Tribute to a Dance Titan

Guru Kelucharan Mahapatra remains the soul of Odissi, and his 100th birth anniversary served as the emotional core of the 2026 event. Speakers reflected on how his vision saved Odissi from obscurity, transforming it into a global phenomenon. Sri Gopabandhu Patnaik, President of the Samaj, opened the session by connecting the historical struggle for Odisha’s statehood with the cultural struggle to preserve its arts. Sri S. N. Sabat, former IPS officer and current Chairman of the UP Subordinate Services Commission, lauded the diaspora’s commitment to maintaining these roots while residing in Uttar Pradesh.

Literary Excellence Recognised

Renowned feminist writer and educationist Dr. Sarojini Sahoo received the prestigious Lucknow Odia Sahitya Samman 2026 during the ceremony. Known for her bold exploration of social structures and gender dynamics, Dr. Sahoo’s influence extends far beyond Odisha's borders. Her works, which have earned both the Sahitya Akademi and Sarala Puraskar, are now staples in multiple Indian and international languages.

Vice President Professor Sukant Chaudhary presented the citation, while Dr. Sahoo used her platform to discuss the shifting landscape of feminist literature. She noted that breaking social barriers requires consistent intellectual courage, a trait mirrored in the resilient history of the Odia people. This intellectual exchange added a layer of depth to the celebration, moving beyond mere festivities into a space of critical cultural discourse.

Cultural Brilliance and Culinary Traditions

Vibrant energy filled the hall as Dr. Manojan Pradhan and Maniti Pradhan took the stage. Their troupe, recognized by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, delivered a performance that echoed the rhythmic precision Guru Kelucharan was famous for. Each movement served as a living monument to the maestro's choreography.

Beyond the stage, the annual souvenirNirmalyawas launched, documenting the Samaj's year-long efforts to unite the community. Secretary Professor D. R. Sahu’s annual report highlighted how the organization serves as a vital bridge for students and professionals moving from Odisha to Lucknow. To complete the immersion, the Odisha Food Festival offered attendees a taste of home, featuring authentic delicacies that represent the state’s unique culinary identity. This gathering proved that Utkal Diwas is not just a date on a calendar but a portable identity that thrives wherever the Odia spirit finds a home.
