Low pressure area forms over Bay of Bengal, no threat to Odisha yet

Bhubaneswar, May 11: A low pressure area has developed over the southwest Bay of Bengal near the north Sri Lanka coast under the influence of an upper air cyclonic circulation prevailing over the Gulf of Mannar and adjoining Sri Lanka, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Monday.

The system formed early on May 11 and is being closely monitored by weather officials.

According to the IMD, the low pressure area formed around 5:30 am. The associated cyclonic circulation currently extends up to 5.8 km above mean sea level.

Meteorologists said the system is likely to intensify gradually and become more marked over the next 48 hours. Such weather systems generally influence rainfall activity and wind patterns over nearby coastal regions depending on their movement and strength.

However, the formation of the low pressure area has not triggered any immediate concern for Odisha. The IMD has not issued any warning, alert, or forecast indicating adverse weather conditions in the state due to the system.

Officials said there is no sign of any major impact on Odisha at present.

Weather experts have also stated that the system is unlikely to significantly affect Odisha’s weather conditions in the coming days. While coastal regions continue to remain under observation as a precautionary measure, current weather models suggest that the low pressure area may not have a direct influence on the state.

Residents have therefore been advised not to panic and to follow only official weather updates issued by the IMD.
