Ladakh Violence: Sonam Wangchuk’s wife approaches SC, seeks his immediate release

New Delhi, October 3: Gitanjali Angmo, the wife of social activist Sonam Wangchuk, has filed a habeas corpus petition in the Supreme Court of India, requesting his immediate release. Wangchuk was detained after violent clashes in Ladakh, and his wife seeks justice under Article 32 of the Constitution of India.

Wangchuk, known for his activism, was arrested under the National Security Act (NSA) on September 26, two days after protests advocating for statehood and Sixth Schedule status for Ladakh led to the deaths of four people and left 90 others injured. He is currently being held in Jodhpur jail, Rajasthan.

In her plea, filed through her lawyer, Sarvam Ritam Khare, Angmo has challenged both Wangchuk’s detention and the invocation of the NSA against him. The petition also points out that Angmo has yet to receive a copy of the detention order, which she claims is a breach of legal procedures.

Furthermore, Angmo stated that she has been unable to establish any contact with her husband since his detention.
