Keonjhar, June 2: Determined to continue his education despite severe financial constraints, a meritorious student from Keonjhar district has taken up work at a hotel to fund his higher studies.
Bailochan Juang, a resident of Nadam village under Barahagad Panchayat in Banspal block, secured 83 per cent marks in the Higher Secondary (+2 Arts) examination this year. Aspiring to pursue graduation at BJB College or another reputed institution in Bhubaneswar, he is now working at a hotel in Jhumpara to save money for admission and study expenses.
The eldest son of Kirtan Juang and Golap Juang, Bailochan belongs to an economically weak family. After passing the matriculation examination in 2024, he wanted to continue his studies, but his father was unable to bear the educational expenses due to poverty. As a result, he remained at home while facing pressure to take up labour work instead of pursuing academics.
His situation came to the notice of Ramakanta Swain, Principal of Pateswar Higher Secondary School at Shuakati, who arranged for his admission and extended support for his education. With guidance from the principal and faculty members, Bailochan successfully completed his +2 studies with distinction.
To realize his dream of studying in Bhubaneswar, Bailochan has been working since March at a hotel in Jhumpara for a monthly salary of ₹9,000. His responsibilities include washing utensils and clearing used plates. Of his earnings over the past three months, he has spent around ₹4,000 on household expenses and some amount on repairing his mobile phone. He plans to use the remaining money for college admission and purchasing books.
“I want to pursue my degree in Bhubaneswar if I get the opportunity,” Bailochan said, adding that he will soon apply to various colleges for admission into undergraduate courses.
Principal Ramakanta Swain said the college had provided all possible assistance to the student, including access to books from the library, while teachers and staff members contributed towards his hostel and educational expenses.
Bailochan’s struggle and determination have emerged as an inspiring example of how perseverance and a commitment to education can overcome economic hardship.
