Keonjhar, July 6: In a major breakthrough against organised crime, Keonjhar Police on Monday injured a notorious robbery accused during an encounter near the Patala forest in Champua. The accused, identified as Mohammad Nasif, sustained a bullet injury to his right leg and was admitted to Dharanidhar Medical College and Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment under tight security.
According to police, Nasif is a habitual offender and is wanted in multiple theft, robbery and other criminal cases registered at various police stations in Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj districts.
Police said a team had launched an operation to apprehend Nasif early on Tuesday when he allegedly attempted to flee after spotting the officers. During the chase, the accused reportedly opened fire on the police, firing two rounds in an attempt to escape.
The police retaliated, hitting Nasif in the right leg and successfully overpowering him. He was immediately shifted to Dharanidhar Medical College and Hospital for treatment, while armed police personnel have been deployed at the hospital as a precautionary measure.
Further investigation into the incident is underway, and police are expected to reveal more details about the operation and Nasif's alleged criminal network.
