Puri, May 6: Police have arrested four persons involved in the daylight brutal attack at Kanas Bazaar, while the prime accused and three others remain absconding. A four-member special squad, with assistance from the cyber cell, has launched an intensive search operation to nab the remaining accused.

Police also conducted a scene recreation with the arrested individuals as part of the investigation. Despite four days having passed since the incident, fear continues to grip local residents, many of whom are reluctant to speak out. However, the people of Kanas have demanded strict action against those responsible.

In a related development, the Superintendent of Police has transferred three Assistant Sub-Inspectors (ASIs) from Kanas police station and eight ASIs from five other police stations.

According to sources, the incident occurred on Sunday morning on the Pipili–Kanas main road, where a group of 5–7 youths launched a murderous assault on Mrutyunjaya Bharimal of Dokanda village. The attack was reportedly driven by past enmity. The assailants chased the victim and attacked him with a sharp weapon, severing his right hand and right leg near the knee.

The attackers allegedly went further and attempted to run him over with a motorcycle. Mrutyunjaya lay critically injured at the spot for over 30 minutes before police arrived and shifted him to a hospital. He remains in critical condition and is currently battling for his life.
