Guarding the Silence: Inside Odisha’s Elite Anti-Extremist Force

Ensuring peace across an entire region requires an unwavering, round-the-clock vigil. While the public sleeps securely, a highly specialized group of operatives spends 365 days a year deep within volatile terrains. These individuals form the Special Operation Group (SOG) of the Odisha Police Established in 2004, this elite tactical unit has systematically dismantled extremist networks that once heavily compromised the security of fourteen major districts. Through rigorous physical mastery, advanced technical expertise, and precise tactical coordination, the SOG stands as a formidable, invisible shield safeguarding the region from internal threats.

Building the Ultimate Tactical Warrior

The transformation of an ordinary police officer into an elite commando requires intense psychological and physical endurance. The journey begins daily at dawn within specialised training facilities like the SOG camp in Chandaka. Initial phases focus heavily on standard physical proficiency tests, which quickly escalate to monumental endurance runs. Candidates carry heavy tactical gear across distances ranging from short sprints to exhausting 30-kilometer route marches under strict operational time constraints.

A central pillar of this physical development is the Battle Obstacle Assault Course (BOAC), commonly referred to as the confidence course. This intense 1.2-kilometer track features 32 distinct environmental hurdles designed to test agility and mental resolve. Trainees must navigate complex networks of over-bridges, double walls, and hanging ropes within a standard twelve-minute window. This setup builds the immediate confidence required to handle unpredictable hazards during real-world deployments. Out of hundreds who enter this grinding pipeline, only a select fraction successfully earns the title of an SOG commando.

Tactical Intelligence and Modern Weaponry

True operational success requires more than physical power; it demands sharp intellectual development. SOG operators split their training between active outdoor fields and advanced smart classrooms. Inside these academic spaces, personnel master fields like advanced map reading, landscape navigation, and the critical art of concealment. This ensures that when commandos deploy, they can use the natural environment to move completely undetected and neutralize threats efficiently.

Furthermore, the unit utilises an impressive array of advanced international weaponry tailored for both close-quarters urban combat and long-range wilderness scenarios. The SOG armory includes high-precision instruments like the Israeli-designed 9mm Micro Uzi and USA-manufactured Glock 19X secondary pistols. For extended engagements, operators utilise powerful tools like the Swiss SG 553 long-range rifle, Sig Sauer platforms, and specialized Galil sniper systems. To ensure total accuracy under stress, personnel undergo continuous training at dedicated firing ranges, operating under the strict doctrine of achieving complete threat neutralisation with maximum ammunition efficiency.

Modern Warfare and the Vision for Complete Peace

The ultimate validation of SOG training occurs during extended Long-Range Patrols (LRP) within deep, isolated forests. During these operations, units spend up to seven days completely cut off from standard logistics, relying purely on wilderness survival skills. Commandos practice advanced counter-ambush drills and dynamic communication shifts to counter evolving adversary plans. To maintain this high operational tempo, the organization uses sophisticated digital VHF systems, satellite trackers, and dedicated backup extraction teams to ensure seamless coordination with central command.

Looking ahead, the SOG is shifting its focus toward a comprehensive strategy for lasting peace. Beyond direct field operations, future initiatives emphasize community-oriented civic action programs. By establishing secure forward camps, interacting directly with rural villages, and addressing local grievances, the force aims to prevent extremist recruitment entirely. Through this balanced blend of tactical dominance and community engagement, the SOG continues to secure the region's stable, peaceful future.
