India dominated England to claim first ODI series advantage

India secured a brilliant six-wicket victory over England at Edgbaston to claim a 1-0 advantage in their three-match series. Chasing a competitive target of 259 runs, exceptional batting performances from Shubman Gill, Axar Patel, and Washington Sundar ensured a smooth finish with more than four overs remaining. This remarkable victory extends India’s historic dominance at Edgbaston, a venue forever etched in fans' memories for their unforgettable 2013 Champions Trophy triumph.

Early Wickets Followed By Middle Order Resilience

Opening the run chase, India suffered a minor setback when star batter Rohit Sharma fell for just 11 runs. Undeterred by the early loss, Gill stabilized the innings, crafting an elegant 80 runs before unfortunately retiring hurt. His composed knock kept his team firmly on track during the tricky middle overs. Following the subsequent quick departures of Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, and KL Rahul, the English bowlers briefly sensed an opening. Fast bowlers Jofra Archer, Josh Tongue, and Sam Curran grabbed regular wickets, yet they ultimately struggled to maintain continuous pressure on the visitors.

Stepping into a challenging situation, Patel completely shifted the match's momentum by producing a spectacular unbeaten 57 off 52 deliveries. Sundar offered perfect support from the other end, blasting 52 not out from 63 balls. Together, this dynamic duo forged an unbroken 102-run partnership, comfortably guiding their side to the finish line and earning Patel the Player of the Match honors.

English Batting Resistance Falls Short

Earlier in the afternoon, Patel delivered a true masterclass in left-arm spin, claiming four crucial wickets to restrict the hosts to a total of 258. Prasidh Krishna and Gurnoor Brar provided excellent support with the ball, claiming two scalps each. Jasprit Bumrah also celebrated a significant personal milestone, securing his 150th ODI wicket.

Despite a rocky start that saw five quick wickets fall for only 19 runs, England managed a late recovery. Joe Root anchored their effort with a resilient 76 not out, while Liam Dawson hammered an aggressive 68. Ultimately, their lower-order fightback was not enough to prevent India from recording their sixth consecutive ODI win against the English squad.
